Considered the defensive anchors of the team, Center Backs work in pairs or trios to defend the penalty box and surrounding areas. Read on to learn more about the position, and how to play it well:

Positioning is everything

In order to accurately defend the back, Center Backs need to be properly positioned throughout the game. It’s important to stay centrally positioned between the goalkeeper and midfield, seeing as they are the final line of defense before the Goalkeeper. Center Backs need to work with their defensive partners, and adjust their position based on where the ball is on the field.

Main goal? Stay defensive

As a Center Back, the main responsibility is to stay defensive. Part of those responsibilities include: Marking opposing forwards and tracking their runs, tackling and intercepting passes, clearing the ball from dangerous zones, and blocking shots.

Going on the offense is also important

Even though the primary goal of a Center Back is to stay defensive, they can also help out with contributing to offensive attacks. They need to be able to initiate plays with accurate short and long passes, help with corner kicks, and move the ball forward if space allows for it.

Demonstrate leadership and communication skills

It’s important for the Center Back to communicate clearly, and use leadership skills. They need to always be communicating with the fellow defenders and the Goalkeeper. Showing leadership is also crucial. They need to organize the defensive line, and need to guide midfielders on defensive positioning. And finally, motivating and encouraging teammates goes a long way as well.

Develop these essential soccer skills

To excel as a Center Back, it’s important to have strong tackling ability, accurate heading, good spatial awareness, and precise short and long-range passing. Center backs also need to have strength, speed, and endurance.

Have a tactical understanding of the game

Strong Center Backs understand different defensive systems, know when to step up and when to drop back, and have the ability to recognize when to play the ball and when to clear it. It’s also important that they stay focused during the match, be decisive, anticipate plays and always think ahead, and to remain calm under pressure.
